WHAT IS LOVE?

SCRIPTURE: ‘Love is patient, love is kind.’ – 1 Corinthians 13:4. (NIV)

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Love displays a genuine interest in the lives and destinies of other people.

The scripture reveals that our God is the God of love. It was Love in His Heart that made Him to send His only begotten Son to die for our sins while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8).

God created us in His image (Genesis 1:26) and deposited His character of love in our lives so we can love our neighbour the way He loves us.

To be able to love our neighbour, we must understand the meaning of love:
1. Love is Showing Kindness.
Love is treating people the way you would want to be treated. The Message Bible Version of Matthew 7:12 says, ‘Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behaviour: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them...’ How would you want to be treated? Treat others like that.

2. Love is Selfless Existence.
Love is never self-absorbed or self-focused. Love displays a genuine interest in the lives and destinies of other people. Loveless-ness, on the other hand is manifested in armed robbery, in husband-snatching, in embezzlement of public funds, in a lecturer sexually harassing a student in exchange for a pass mark, etc.

Remember this: Love displays a genuine interest in the lives and destinies of other people.

ASSIGNMENT(s):
1. List three practical actions of selfless love that you are willing to implement in your life in order to please others.
2. Practise them to display genuine interest in people as Jesus did.

PRAYER: Lord, I refuse to be selfish. Help me, Lord, to show interest in the well-being of others, in Jesus’ Name.
